Books can immerse you in a world not found elsewhere. Because they trust your imagination. They give you the words, and then you give life to those words. Books have the potential to take you to different types of places. That's why I like books.
Some books are better than others. Now I will list the five books I found the best.
1. The Lost World, by Michael Crichton. It was the first novel I fell in love with. I've always loved dinosaurs, but I did not know how much I could reach them. This is the part of the book in which the protagonist drives a motorcycle with a child on his back. The boy tries to shoot a dinosaur with a sedative. The protagonist tells the child that he has only one chance. In fact, they have three, but the lie works and the child beats the dinosaur. I remember how excited I was when I first read it. It is an extraordinary book.
2. Watership Down, by Bryan Adams. There is nothing better for a book about rabbit migration. This book has a lot of heart. I appreciate books that are driven by characters. This book has a large selection of very interesting characters. The action is exciting and well marked. You do not know what's going to happen next, but you want to get there. It's a page-turning and it's a lot of fun.
3. Rules of the Cider House, by James Irving. This book is more mature than the last two. These are heavy topics and complex characters. It is a beautiful book. Irving writes his prose better than most writers. Enter the correct amount of details in combination with the right amount of action. It's an exciting read, but far from a thriller.
4. The End of Romanticism, Graham Greene. This is my favorite book ever written. It's short and it's anything but cute. Graham Greene seems to have an agenda in this book, but in the end, he will not know what it is. It's complex and it's easy. It's all, but well defined. It's an impossible book to categorize, but very easy to read. It's a book that should be in every coat.
5. Slapstick, Kurt Vonnegut. Certainly your most underrated book. It seems that critics wanted to hate this book. It's very entertaining and has some of the most memorable moments of any Vonnegut book. Although I loved Bluebeard and Deadeye Dick, this book is the most memorable one. It's perfect.
